The plugin is available for Firefox, Chrome, and Safari.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You will also need to install the appropriate plug-in to be able to use Zotero with your word processing software. Plug-ins are available for MS Word and LibreOffice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Information for WU staff<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>To install Zotero on WU work computers, please download the program via the Software Center in your computer&#8217;s start menu. Updates for the software can be done independently by activating <em>Check for updates<\/em> under the tab <em>Help<\/em> in Zotero.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Zotero account<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to share your references with others or synchronize your reference library to different devices, you will need a free Zotero account, which you can set up on the <a href=\"http:\/\/zotero.org\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"zotero.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Zotero homepage<\/a>. The number of literature references you can save is unlimited, but for attached files (e.g. PDFs), storage space is limited to 300 MB. Additional storage space can be purchased if necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A number of different apps are available for mobile devices, you can find out more <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zotero.org\/support\/mobile\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"http:\/\/www.zotero.org\/support\/mobile\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-blue-background-color has-background\"><strong>Please note<\/strong>: The data of Zotero accounts is processed outside of the European Economic Area (EEA). Please note the formal requirements for entering names.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Entering names<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Zotero offers two options for entering names. One-field mode is used for entering the names of organizations, research institutions, or other facilities acting as author or editor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For each new author, press the plus button for a new field where you can enter the name of a person or institution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can assign roles (author, editor, etc.) by clicking the <em>Author<\/em> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"73\" height=\"22\" class=\"wp-image-2631\" style=\"width: 73px;\" src=\"https:\/\/library.wu.ac.at\/bib\/fit4research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/en_zotero_rollenwahl.png\" alt=\"\"> button.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Managing collections<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Zotero allows users to create collections to sort references: Right-click on <em>My Library<\/em> and click on <em>New Collection\u2026<\/em> or click on the <em>New Collection&#8230; <\/em>button <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"25\" height=\"21\" class=\"wp-image-1150\" style=\"width: 25px;\" src=\"https:\/\/library.wu.ac.at\/bib\/fit4research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Sammlungen-verwalten-Zotero.png\" alt=\"\"> to create a new collection. You can also make subcollections by right-clicking on an existing collection and selecting <em>New Subcollection\u2026<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Automatically adding references<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Importing references<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Most databases offer a number of different export options, and Zotero is compatible with several file formats. In most cases the formats <em>RIS<\/em> or <em>BibTeX<\/em> are available, both of which can be opened directly with Zotero or imported using <em>File<\/em> \u00bb <em>Import<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Searching via ISBN, DOI or PMID<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Zotero allows you to search for literature references via pre-existing numeric identifier (ISBN, DOI or PMID) and to import them directly into your database. These plug-ins recognize how the bibliographic data is formatted based on the site address and import it directly into your Zotero library.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The symbol to the right of the Zotero logo in your browser indicates that the plugin has detected embedded metadata on the page. Clicking on it will give you the option of saving the whole page as a literature reference or saving only the bibliographic data. In that window, select <em>Advanced<\/em> at the top. Then, in the <em>General<\/em> tab, under <em>OpenURL <\/em>in the field <em>Resolver<\/em>, enter the URL https:\/\/openurl.wu.ac.at\/resolve. Zotero will open the page of the record in the WU Catalog in a browser window, allowing you direct access to the document, depending on its availability. To access a document online, you need to be connected to the WU network. Zotero offers a large choice of different styles. Under <em>Tools \u00bb Preferences \u00bb Cite \u00bb Styles<\/em> you can select a style, or use the <em>Get additional styles\u2026<\/em> function to import additional styles. If the style you need is not available in Zotero, please contact the library at <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"mailto:library@wu.ac.at\" target=\"_blank\">library@wu.ac.at<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Installing the Word plug-in<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Go to <em>Edit <\/em>\u00bb <em>Preferences<\/em> \u00bb <em>Cite<\/em> \u00bb <em>Word Processors<\/em> to install plugins for Zotero Standalone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Document preferences<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Entering your first citation will open the <em>Document Preferences<\/em> window, where you can determine the citation style, language, and other settings. You can restrict your results to the year of publication, as well.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select on the reference you want to insert.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click on the name to add any page numbers, prefixes, or suffixes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Press <em>Enter<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"967\" height=\"240\" src=\"https:\/\/library.wu.ac.at\/bib\/fit4research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/en_zotero_zitat_bearbeiten.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2426\" srcset=\"https:\/\/library.wu.ac.at\/bib\/fit4research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/en_zotero_zitat_bearbeiten.png 967w, https:\/\/library.wu.ac.at\/bib\/fit4research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/en_zotero_zitat_bearbeiten-300x74.png 300w, https:\/\/library.wu.ac.at\/bib\/fit4research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/en_zotero_zitat_bearbeiten-768x191.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 967px) 100vw, 967px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If the selected citation style requires footnotes, a footnote with the citation will be automatically created.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Inserting secondary citations<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Please note<\/strong>: Generally, secondary quotations are best avoided in academic writing and should only be used if it is impossible to obtain the original source.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zotero can automatically format secondary quotations using the following steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Insert both quotations (original and secondary) with Zotero, so that both sources appear in the bibliography.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Type in the quotations as normal text in the desired format.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hide the Zotero quotations by marking the quote and activating the option <em>Hidden<\/em> in the Font menu (CRTL+D or right click \u00bb <em>Font<\/em>). You will still see the citations when editing your paper, but they will not show on a print-out or when exported as a PDF file.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Creating a bibliography<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Zotero does not automatically create a bibliography. To create a bibliography, place your cursor where you want your bibliography to be inserted and click <em>Add\/Edit Bibliography<\/em> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"71\" height=\"74\" class=\"wp-image-2427\" style=\"width: 71px;\" src=\"https:\/\/library.wu.ac.at\/bib\/fit4research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/zotero_insert_bibliography.jpg\" alt=\"\"> in the Zotero toolbar. A bibliography with all citations in the document will be inserted and any references added later will be automatically added to the bibliography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Editing and deleting citations<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To add page numbers or prefixes like <em>cf<\/em>., <em>see<\/em>, etc., place your cursor in the reference to be edited and click <em>Add\/Edit Citation<\/em>. A Zotero window will appear where you can enter your changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Use the Delete or Backspace keys on your keyboard to delete references.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Updating citations<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>When you have edited a reference in Zotero, press the <em>Refresh<\/em> button <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"64\" height=\"21\" class=\"wp-image-1137\" style=\"width: 64px;\" src=\"https:\/\/library.wu.ac.at\/bib\/fit4research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/refresh-button-juris-m.png\" alt=\"\"> in the Zotero toolbar to update the reference in your database.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\" style=\"padding-top:3em;padding-right:10rem;padding-bottom:3em;padding-left:10rem\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-container-core-group-is-layout-0682ed28 wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator alignwide has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"notes\">Working with PDF attachments and notes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When attaching PDFs to a title, they are automatically renamed according to the metadata of the parent entry. You can turn this feature on or off under <em>Edit \u00bb Preferences \u00bb General.<\/em> It also indexes the PDF, which allows the contents of the PDF to be searched in Zotero.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Double-click the title or directly on the attached PDF to open Zotero&#8217;s PDF reader and notes editor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1015\" height=\"774\" src=\"https:\/\/library.wu.ac.at\/bib\/fit4research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/zotero_pdf-reader_en.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2428\" srcset=\"https:\/\/library.wu.ac.at\/bib\/fit4research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/zotero_pdf-reader_en.jpg 1015w, https:\/\/library.wu.ac.at\/bib\/fit4research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/zotero_pdf-reader_en-300x229.jpg 300w, https:\/\/library.wu.ac.at\/bib\/fit4research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/zotero_pdf-reader_en-768x586.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1015px) 100vw, 1015px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Here you can highlight the PDF, create notes, and collect image or table citations. To do this, select the appropriate tool from the toolbar at the top of the editor <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/learn.wu.ac.at\/open\/fit4research\/download\/file\/zotero_pdf-reader_werkzeugleiste\" width=\"90\" height=\"20\"> and a color for the markup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The annotations are displayed on the left side. You can add your own comments and keywords (tags) to them. Annotations marked in this way can be shown or hidden by color or keyword selection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Add annotations to notes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In the main Zotero window, right-click the title of a resource and choose <em>Add Note from Annotations<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"423\" height=\"212\" src=\"https:\/\/library.wu.ac.at\/bib\/fit4research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/zotero_pdf-reader_notiz-aus-anmerkungen_en.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2429\" srcset=\"https:\/\/library.wu.ac.at\/bib\/fit4research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/zotero_pdf-reader_notiz-aus-anmerkungen_en.jpg 423w, https:\/\/library.wu.ac.at\/bib\/fit4research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/zotero_pdf-reader_notiz-aus-anmerkungen_en-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 423px) 100vw, 423px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Zotero now creates a note with the title <em>Annotations <\/em>and the time it was created. When you select it, you will see the annotations and corresponding part of the text on the right. By clicking on the dots in the upper right corner, you can show or hide the annotation colors and evidence. To do this, click <em>Add Note<\/em> and &#8211; just as you would cite a title &#8211; select the note you want to insert.
