It is free to use for everybody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, only a limited set of citation styles is available in EndNote Web. Therefore we recommend that WU students, staff and faculty use EndNote Web in addition to the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/library.wu.ac.at\/bib\/fit4research\/index.php\/en\/fit4research-english\/cite-and-organize-your-literature\/programs\/endnote\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/library.wu.ac.at\/bib\/fit4research\/index.php\/en\/fit4research-english\/cite-and-organize-your-literature\/programs\/endnote\/\">EndNote 20<\/a><\/strong> desktop program, with which it can be synchronized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instructions for EndNote 20 and the citation styles can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/library.wu.ac.at\/bib\/fit4research\/index.php\/en\/fit4research-english\/cite-and-organize-your-literature\/programs\/endnote\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/library.wu.ac.at\/bib\/fit4research\/index.php\/en\/fit4research-english\/cite-and-organize-your-literature\/programs\/endnote\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Setting up an account<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Open the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.myendnoteweb.com\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"www.myendnoteweb.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EndNote Web homepage<\/a> and click on <em>Create an account<\/em>. Sign up using a valid email address and fill out the registration form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After you have logged in, you can view your account or change your settings under the menu <em>Options<\/em>. If this feature is not available, most databases allow you to export references as a <em>RIS file<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Take the following steps to import the resulting file:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"509\" height=\"179\" src=\"https:\/\/library.wu.ac.at\/bib\/fit4research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/en_enw_ref_importieren_1.png\" alt=\"The \u201cImport References\u201d window in EndNote Web. In the field \u201cTo\u201d, a group can be selected. At the bottom of the window, the selection can be confirmed by clicking \u201cImport\u201d.\" class=\"wp-image-2405\" srcset=\"https:\/\/library.wu.ac.at\/bib\/fit4research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/en_enw_ref_importieren_1.png 509w, https:\/\/library.wu.ac.at\/bib\/fit4research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/en_enw_ref_importieren_1-300x106.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 509px) 100vw, 509px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In the database, select the option <em>Export as RIS file<\/em> (sometimes called <em>Export to EndNote<\/em>) and save the file on your computer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In EndNote Web, go to <em>Collect <\/em>\u00bb <em>Import References<\/em>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select the downloaded file.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select <em>RefMan RIS<\/em> from the dropdown <em>Import Option<\/em> menu.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select the group you want the reference imported into.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Creating references manually<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In EndNote Web, go to <em>Collect<\/em> \u00bb <em>New Reference<\/em>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select the Reference Type: This will define which fields are available and how the citation and bibliographic entry will be formatted.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fill out the required bibliographic data. Please note the formal requirements for entering names.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Entering names<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Names should be entered directory style, i.e. <em>last name(s), first name(s)<\/em>, so that the program will know how to format them depending on the required context. Anything in front of the comma will be sorted as the last name, anything after the comma counts as the person\u2019s first name or names. Aristocratic titles like <em>von<\/em>, <em>van<\/em>, or <em>de<\/em> are given as part of the first name:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Judith Butler<br><em>Butler<strong>,<\/strong> Judith<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Johann Matthias von der Schulenburg<br><em>Schulenburg<strong>,<\/strong> Johann Matthias von der<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Suffixes found at the end of a name must be listed after a second comma:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>George Bush Sr.<br><em>Bush<strong>,<\/strong> George<strong>,<\/strong> Sr.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The names of organizations, companies, etc. are listed with a comma at the end:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>International Monetary Fund<br><em>International Monetary Fund<strong>,<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If an institution\u2019s name includes one or more commas, insert a second comma immediately after the first and leave off the closing one:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ministerium f\u00fcr Wissenschaft, Forschung und Wirtschaft<br><em>Ministerium f\u00fcr Wissenschaft<strong>,,<\/strong> Forschung und Wirtschaft<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Entering multiple authors<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Multiple authors of the same work are entered in the same entry field. On the first line, it says \u201cHanappi-Egger, Edeltraud\u201d, on the second line \u201cBadelt, Christoph\u201d.\" class=\"wp-image-2406\" srcset=\"https:\/\/library.wu.ac.at\/bib\/fit4research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/en_enw_mehrere_aut1.png 321w, https:\/\/library.wu.ac.at\/bib\/fit4research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/en_enw_mehrere_aut1-300x41.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 321px) 100vw, 321px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Managing groups<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To sort your references, EndNote Web allows you to create groups: Under <em>Organize<\/em> \u00bb <em>Manage My Groups<\/em> you can create groups and share them with other users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can add references to a group under <em>My References<\/em> by checking the box by the entry and selecting \u201c<em>Add to \u2026 Group<\/em>. References can be added to multiple groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\" style=\"padding-top:3em;padding-right:10rem;padding-bottom:3em;padding-left:10rem\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-container-core-group-is-layout-0682ed28 wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator alignwide has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"styles\">Managing citation styles<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">WU citation styles<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/library.wu.ac.at\/bib\/fit4research\/index.php\/en\/fit4research-english\/cite-and-organize-your-literature\/wu-citation-styles\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/library.wu.ac.at\/bib\/fit4research\/index.php\/en\/fit4research-english\/cite-and-organize-your-literature\/wu-citation-styles\/\">WU citation styles<\/a> are not available in EndNote Web. However, all WU members have access to the desktop version, <strong>EndNote 20<\/strong>, where WU citation styles can also be selected. A guide to EndNote 20 and the citation styles can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/library.wu.ac.at\/bib\/fit4research\/index.php\/en\/fit4research-english\/cite-and-organize-your-literature\/programs\/endnote\/#references\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/library.wu.ac.at\/bib\/fit4research\/index.php\/en\/fit4research-english\/cite-and-organize-your-literature\/programs\/endnote\/#references\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other citation styles<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To create bibliographies and work with the Cite While You Write plug-in, you first need to select a citation style:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Go to <em>Format<\/em> \u00bb <em>Bibliography<\/em> and add the citation styles you need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"110\" src=\"https:\/\/library.wu.ac.at\/bib\/fit4research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/en_enw_format_2-1024x110.png\" alt=\"The menu in EndNote Web. With this plug-in, you can insert and format references from EndNote Web and automatically create a bibliography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Installation and set-up<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Go to your EndNote Web account, select the appropriate installer for your operating system under <em>Options<\/em> \u00bb <em>Download Installers<\/em> and install it on your computer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Open MS Word and go to <em>Endnote<\/em> \u00bb <em>Preferences<\/em>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enter your login data for EndNote Web under <em>Application<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Select a citation style<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Choose your preferred citation style under <em>Style<\/em>. Only the styles that you have already added to your favorites in EndNote Web will be available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Insert a citation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In your text, place the cursor where you want to insert your citation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click on <em>Insert Citations<\/em> in the EndNote toolbar.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enter the author or title of your reference in the search window. You can restrict your results to the year of publication, as well.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Double-click on the reference you want to insert. It will also automatically be added to the bibliography at the end of your paper.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Insert a citation as a footnote<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Insert a footnote.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Place your cursor in the footnote and proceed as described in steps 3 and 4 above.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Editing and deleting citations<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To add page numbers or prefixes like cf., see, etc., right click on the citation and select <em>Edit Citations<\/em> \u00bb <em>More<\/em>. In the editing window under <em>Edit Citation<\/em> you can then add the additional data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Deleting references<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to delete a reference from the text, do not just use the delete key on your keyboard, as this could create problems with your bibliography. Right click on the reference and select <em>Edit Citations<\/em> \u00bb <em>More<\/em>. Click the citation you want to delete under <em>Edit Reference<\/em> \u00bb <em>Remove Citation<\/em> and then click <em>OK<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Updating references<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>When you have edited a reference in EndNote Web, changes are not automatically implemented in your Word document. To make these changes, you have to select <em>Update from My Library<\/em> in the <em>Edit Reference<\/em> window of the appropriate reference. Complete the process by clicking <em>Insert<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"680\" height=\"156\" src=\"https:\/\/library.wu.ac.at\/bib\/fit4research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/enw_update_from_library.png\" alt=\"The \u201cEdit Reference\u201d menu was selected on the right of a reference in EndNote Web. A dropdown menu is displayed, the options \u201cRemove Citation\u201d, \u201cInsert Citation\u201d and \u201cUpdate from My Library\u201d are visible.\" class=\"wp-image-2409\" srcset=\"https:\/\/library.wu.ac.at\/bib\/fit4research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/enw_update_from_library.png 680w, https:\/\/library.wu.ac.at\/bib\/fit4research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/enw_update_from_library-300x69.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Inserting secondary quotations<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Please note<\/strong>: Generally, secondary quotations are best avoided in academic writing and should only be used if it is impossible to obtain the original source.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>EndNote doesn\u2019t offer the option to automatically insert secondary quotations. If both the original and the secondary source should appear in the bibliography, it gets a bit tricky:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Insert both citations (original and secondary) with EndNote Web so that both appear in the bibliography.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Write the citations as regular text next to them in the desired format.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hide the EndNote Web citations by selecting them and using the font formatting menu (CTRL+D or right-click \u00bb Font) to check \u201cHidden.\u201d You can still see the citations while editing, but they won\u2019t be visible in print or when exporting to PDF.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Basic information EndNote Web is a web-based application featuring basic reference management functions.
